Time to reflect:  Furness and the Cistercians

a Lenten weekend for lecturers

Boarbank Hall, Cumbria

11th-13th March 2016

As Christians we are committed to understanding education in the context of the picture of God and humanity that our faith teaches. The weekend will allow us to ponder our faith and its relation to learning.

The speakers will include:

Alexander Murray, a medieval historian from University College, Oxford, and

Claire Lamont, former Professor of the English at the University of Newcastle. We will also visit Furness Abbey.

The dreaming spires have long disappeared. Today’s university lecturers are fighting exhaustion and overwork, and rarely have space to ponder, to potter or to pray. Here is the chance to enjoy a bit of space from the pressure, with like-minded colleagues, and to reflect at a deeper level on why the job is worth doing, and on how we ought to be doing it.

The weekend will include talks and discussion, time to walk or sight-see, the opportunity for shared prayer, with time to relax and reflect in beautiful and peaceful surroundings.

The weekend is aimed in particular at university and college lecturers who are Christians of any persuasion. Anyone with teaching experience in higher education who is sympathetic to its general aims would also be welcome to come.

Where are we?

Boarbank Hall is the home of a community of Augustinian sisters who are committed to the work of hospitality and caring for the sick. Boarbank is set in beautiful grounds overlooking Morecambe Bay. Attached to the convent are a fine chapel, a guest house and a nursing home.

Visitors are welcome to arrive any time from 4 p.m. on Friday. There will be tea at 4 p.m., Evening Prayer at 6 p.m., and supper at 7 p.m. You will be free to stay with us as much of Sunday afternoon as you wish.
